COVID protocols discouraged a formal groundbreaking ceremony, but ground has been broken on a new gym building to replace the almost 70-year old former gym building which had outlived its usefulness.
The new gym building will feature a full-size indoor basketball court with bleachers, as well as two multi-functional exercise rooms and support space. All program spaces are designed to open onto a central concourse with operable glass partitions, to enhance flexibility. According to Bond Director Tim Ryan, this flexibility will allow the new facility to be used for large school gatherings such as science fair exhibits, student social events and community gatherings, in addition to its regular use for physical education.
The project includes construction of a new quad space that will unite recently completed projects and will provide a long-awaited “heart” for the campus. The quad will include student dining areas, socialization spaces, and shaded outdoor learning areas. The need for a quad project was identified in one of our first meetings with Burlingame School District eight years ago, and will be realized under current Measure O bond funding.
