Mission Bay Campus Gender Inclusive Restrooms

University of California, San Francisco

Located on the third floor of Byers Hall at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus, a newly completed inclusive bathroom exemplifies the university’s dedication to creating environments that are both welcoming and thoughtfully designed. Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area—specifically the salt ponds, palm trees, and spruce—the space embraces a tranquil, greenery-themed aesthetic. The design evokes a sense of calm and connection to nature .

More than just visually appealing, the space integrates modern hygiene and accessibility features that reflect UCSF’s commitment to inclusivity. Enhanced lighting creates a bright and inviting ambiance, while hands-free fixtures—including faucets, hand dryers, and sanitizer dispensers—promote cleanliness and ease of use. An automatic door operator ensures the restroom is accessible to individuals of all mobility levels, reinforcing the goal of universal access. High-quality materials, such as glazed tiles and large mirrors, are paired with elegant light fixtures to elevate the overall experience. Every element of the space was selected to support privacy, comfort, and dignity, aligning with the university’s broader mission of fostering respectful and inclusive environments. The restroom was designed not just for functionality, but to actively contribute to the well-being of the UCSF community.

Nearby in Rock Hall, a similarly thoughtful approach guided the design of another updated restroom. This space draws from the blues of the Bay’s waters and UCSF’s signature colors to create a sense of place that feels distinctly local and calming. Like Byers Hall, it features touchless fixtures and automatic doors, prioritizing hygiene and accessibility. Together, these projects serve as models for how UCSF is shaping its physical spaces to reflect values of inclusivity, health, and thoughtful design.
