Francisco Middle School
San Francisco USD
This 1926 middle school was modernized to update existing classrooms and provide technology, life safety and accessibility improvements. The concrete structure was seismically reinforced, while preserving the original architectural character. Exterior painting was carefully considered to bring out the original architectural relief, and a two-story elevator and toilet room addition provided accessible features on budget and without disturbing interior spaces.
Outmoded vocational training areas were converted to new science classrooms, and long interior hallways were broken up to provide spaces for socialization and small group learning.
The school library was transformed to provide better supervision and work spaces for staff, new group and computer learning areas for students, and new glazed breakout rooms for small group activities.
